Andrew Nielsen Evolution of a Still Hunter

After two weeks of warm weather hunting during the rut with my bow in my home state of Wisconsin, and a failed opportunity with a nice ten point buck, I was ready to hit the woods of Upper Michigan with my rifle for a change of pace.

It has become somewhat of a tradition over the past decade for me to join my brother David and sometimes other family members for the rifle season in Upper Michigan. It is an opportunity that started as a way for me to get more hunting time

ShareYourHuntGuy Tips: Watch Your Back When Leaving

Hunting Tip:
Watch Your Back
When spot and stalk hunting, you can hang out on a ridge for hours glassing and not see a thing. When its time to exit your glassing spot, sometimes it helps to double back or go slowly when exiting. Deer and elk recognize when a threat is leaving an area and will sometimes use that time to break cover and move to a new location.

Justin Gannon Very cool elk experience!

So this morning started out as all hunting mornings do for me... get up at 4:45, leave the house by 5:30... get up to the private farm that I hunt at about 6:20... get my boots on and start walking the trail to what we call Packards Creek. I have a damage control tag for an antlerless elk specifically for this farm, and there are three herds wandering around up there. So I start up the trail, checking the popular crossings the elk use as highways to get from the mountain, to the grass fields bel… Continue

Duane Fronek Good winter coyote hunting locations

For those looking for good coyote calling spots in the winter.Frozen creeks, rivers and ponds bordering tag, cedar, balsam, tamarack swamps are the places to go. They'll give you a higher percentage of responses. Coyotes in the winter follow the food. You'll still find them in the fields and small wood lots. But creeks and rivers are better, Food sources are more abundant like deer and rabbits. The other advantage especially Jan. and Feb. is the breeding season and these frozen creeks and rivers are… Continue

Duane Fronek My thoughts on the deer population and predators

If you believe there's only 662 wolves in this state your drinking too much kool-aid. Try around 1500 or more. The DNR and wolf advocates low ball the number so it doesn't sound so bad while blowing smoke and mirrors covering up what wolves do.Wolves require roughly 3000 lbs. of meat yearly, that could equate to roughly 25-27 deer a year. With that in mind we have a high bear population which the DNR finally admitted and issued over 3000+ tags than usual, then you have the coyote population. With… Continue

Brian Amstadt Stop your whining (wisconsin deer hunters)

I so sick of hearing how the dnr is so bad and they're lying to us. Everyone is so caught up in the politics. Who were the people that shot all the deer? We did. Don't shoot everything that moves. Don't take 5 does off your land a year. You know you dont have to use every tag you get. It's common sense. Why would you boycott hunting? To get back at the dnr. Cmon. Sounds to me that you're not real hunters. The baiting issue, and seeing no deer. Get off your asses and get out there, put your time… Continue

Keith Wood Duck hunting SW Louisiana style.

Having lived here in Louisiana less than six months now I thought it was time to try out my hunting lease for "Wood Ducks". After moving here I found a good lease to get on of about 4400 acres of mixed pines and hardwood bottoms. I was thinking acorns and deer and hog hunting. I never thought the "Wood Duck" hunting would be as good as some folks told me this lease was. I have never hunted the elusive wood duck before and was told to get a call because they don't sound like regular ducks, they s… Continue

silvergoldsmith1 Too much information on the back tag. A REASON TO BOYCOTT

I participated by not buying a gun deer license and Boycotting this gun deer season.I did hunt two days during the archery season. I lost my back tag holder with the back tag and carcass tags in it. I spent a month trying to protect my Identity from whoever found my back tag holder. It has my Name,Address,Drivers License Number,Address, and My Physical Description on it, and My Signature. I don't qualify for any credit cards but someone else has two with my name on them, and they tried to get in… Continue

Duane Fronek Owls and Coyotes

We had wind chill warnings out all weekend,-35 below. But couldn't stand seeing the moonlight go to waste.Called a friend who's just getting into calling, and I guess he's as nuts as me.We went out about 9pm.We made our first stand in an alfalfa field that runs along a nice little cedar swamp. We had a cross wind, and tucked our selves in the fence row shadows, with the swamp straight out in front of us about 450 yards. I started the stand with a lone howl from my Red Desert mouth piece. Then waited… Continue

Duane Fronek When things come together on a not so perfect calling setup.

Not exactly a killing spree, but a good hunt nonetheless. I had sometime to make a couple stands this late afternoon. My first stand didn't produce so much as a tirad of screams from a red squirrel. On my second stand,it was a different story. It's a nice open old, drained out beaver pond with a tamarack/balsam swamp on the northeast side. The open area is dotted with old driftwood stumps and pussy willow brush, and marsh grass, with a narrow creek running through it.I had a SW light breeze, and approach… Continue

Duane Fronek The Sherry Road coyote hunt

Only had time today for one stand.Decided to try the spot that I called in and killed a single male a few weeks back. That was the first time I tried that spot, and figured it was worth another shot. The wind had died down since yesterday, with a front moving in tonight.Again,I sat with my back to the north, with the wind coming from the SW.Looking out into this logged out select cut type of a ravine. I started the stand with a high pitched lone howl, with my homemade howler. Then went silent, scanning… Continue

Duane Fronek A nite time fox hunt

This is another story of one of my winter hunts,it's a sneaky redfox this time. I recieved my new antler open reed call yesterday from a guy called Arky Yoter,so I had to give it a try.It sounds great.Well the nite before last I missed a coyote that came in to the syco tweety,I miss judged the distance in the fog.Anyway, last nite I decided to go out again in the moonlite, the first stand I made was behind a farm where I've taken quite a few coyotes over the years both calling and trapping. It was… Continue

Mike Kissel Anyone going out for the anterless hunt?

I'm torn - there is an antlerless hunt next weekend in WI but I'm conflicted. The doe population seems to be at record lows, but on the other hand I have no meat in the freezer. Continue

Ray Coyotes kill hiker

From CBC news 11/05/09: Two more coyotes were destroyed this week in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in the wake of a fatal attack on a hiker. Taylor Mitchell, 19, a folk singer from Toronto, was hiking alone along the Skyline Trail on Oct. 27 when she was attacked by at least two coyotes. She suffered multiple bites and died later in a Halifax hospital. Parks Canada staff tracked down and destroyed one coyote that same night. The animal was sent for testing to the Atlantic Veterinary Cent… Continue

Gary Fenney DA OLD DAYS ARE MISSED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN ...

... BY ME ANYHOW !! The many times, that I would rather not count out loud, in this time of year (Hunting Season) as I lament all them years that came and went and I remember the anticipation of the "Deer Hunt" for weeks in advance. Followed by the the sleepless nights as the time ticked even closer. I remember the swamps crossed, the (BIG) hills climbed and the thickets ventured into and out of scratched and bleeding in pursuit of this allusive "White Tail", mostly but not limited to the hiContinue

silvergoldsmith1 It seems like there is one too many Coyotes in Texas too

Jessica Simpson's little dog Daisy was taken by a Coyote right in front of her and her friends. In their yard. Someone should go Coyote Hunting around there. The problem with Coyotes is getting worse in the Metro areas as well. I feel bad about the loss of a little dog like that one, and her heart must be breaking. I lost my Redbone Female from my brother's house in Nelsonville while I was in school, and she was taken by a human not a coyote. I looked for her for five years. Her name is Nipper.… Continue

Ryan Linderson So I did a little "scouting" today...

...and was presented with a perfect "sure-thing" bow shot. How come that happens 2 weeks before the season when I don't have the chance to kill it? I was on my parents property. I was sitting next to a stone wall doing some glassing. Nothing major, just went on a whim pretty much. I'm not there 20 minutes when this big fat doe walks up behind me. Literally 5 yards away. It was even on my left side, so I wouldn't of even had to stand or shift my weight to make a bow shot. She stops, broadside of… Continue
