700+ lbs Black Bear Killed by Combine Cont'd
The bear was taken to the Augusta Locker Plant to be prepared for mounting. It was there that the animal was first weighed and measured. Field dressed, the bear weighed in at 618 pounds and measured 7 feet from head to tail.
The Schloughs were told at the locker that they could add 80 to 100 pounds, depending on the size animal, to reach an approximate actual weight.
"So we figure that bear had to weigh at least 700. We figure 700 to 720," Phyllis said.
It's too early to tell if the massive animal will break any records since the skull has
to be dried for 60 days before it can be scored. Phyllis says they believe it has the potential to break the state mark and will probably break the Dunn County record. More common DNR wildlife specialist Jess Carstens said, "This is a thing that, for whatever reason, is happening quite regularly that [bears] are denning up in the middle of fields and corn fields seem to be particularly common due to the amount of debris from harvesting the corn that's on the ground. There's a little more stuff to pull in on top of them as they snuggle into the hole that they've dug." Phyllis reported that they frequently see bears on their land. And she said she recently saw a sow and cub in a corn field that was being harvested.
A full-body mount after paying $75 to keep the bear, Neil is having the bear full-body mounted by Tom Persons, owner of TP Taxidermy.
"He's hardly ever had time to hunt or fish or anything because of farming," Phyllis said of Neil. “And so, he's going to keep the bear, and he's going to have it mounted. He's really proud of his trophy." She said they were told by Persons that he'll have to use a grizzly bear form to mount the bear because there aren't black bear mounts big enough to do the
job.
Person reportedly also believes the bear to be 15 to 20 years old, but a tooth will be pulled during the mounting process to determine its age.
According to Wikipedia.com , male bears can reach 660 pounds, but exceptionally large males can weigh up to 800 pounds.
Phyllis said Neil was recently trying to come up with a name for the huge animal that will soon occupy a large amount of space somewhere in their home.
"I thought this was kind of funny. He said, 'I'm going to name that thing Hercules.’...I thought Hercules for that bear was a good name."

Hey Tony,
I checked into the hog bait being used for bear bait thing out.
The answer is yes, hog bait will work for bears. If you can find the most rancid smelling mix then it should work as good as putting a McDonalds in Ethiopia.
But here are a few other recipies you can use to better your odds. I do know for a fact that bears have a big time sweet tooth, even more so than the hogs. So, this is something to keep in mind. Dont be afraid to experiment with baits, that is what I do and have had great sucess. Just remember the animals you go after are wild, how often does a bear run into pastries of some kind of sweet mix, even a rancid mix like old fish with a little jello. To us it is shit, but to yogi it is the honey hole. Something to remember. I like to do my experimental baiting in the off season, with the exception of the hog, because they are sought after year round.
Another thing about bears is, they can not stand onions. So, whatever you mix, make sure that it dont have onions in it.
1) Home Made Bear Pops (3 pounders)
Take 4 bottles of white Karo syrup
5 lbs of white sugar
1 bag of brown sugar
2 or three boxes of strawberry jello
1 bottle of cheap vanilla
get two (plastic) coffee cans ready and spray them down with pam or some non stick stuff. Make two handles out ot wire or coat hangers and make them to where they stand up in the coffee can.
Mix everything together in a Big tall pot. You need the room to stirr and a long handled big spoon.
Boil this mix, take care cause it bubbles lots and will burn the crap out of you. The bubbles on your hand wont go away like water, it just stays there and burns.
Those of you from the country, this is like cooking down syrup. Boil this mix down for a good while. Keep a big bowl of cold water next to the stove. From time to time get a little on the end of the spoon and put it in the water.
Keep boiling it down till when it hits the water it turnes really tacky. When it gets to where you want it then at the last stirr in a teaspoon of baking soda. This makes it kind of froth up.
Then fill your containers, put in your handles and then put them in the freezer to cool off. You can use coffee cans. When cool dont try to pull the 3 lb. suckers out of the cans, Cut them off in the woods. Make sure you hang the bait to where the bear can just reach it. When it rains, it melts it a little spreading more strawberry flavor to the ground. It should make some great footage watching them play with it too. Anyway See whatcha think. It doesnt cost much at any rate.
2) Fill a few socks up with molasses and hang them by the tree limbs so it can drip out slowly, this works rather well.
3) Get some of the cheapest dry dog food you can find and some strawberry Jello. Mix together with a little water. This will attract the bears as well.
4) Get a large glass jar with lid. Poke some holes in the lid. Fill the jar with bacon fat. Put the lid on. Hang the jar upside down, high in the tree, close to the trunk, and in the sun. As the sun melts the fat it drips down the tree. Yogi should show up soon afterwords.
5) Now here are two other baits that are supposed to be the best. One is hard to come by, and the other is flat out nasty, but they both work very well.
The one that is hard to come by is beaver carcasses, hang them up in a tree and the scent will bring in any bear.
The nasty one is used tampons or pads. Yup the very thing that makes us men miserable once per month is one of the bears favorite treats. And no, I am not trying to make you look like a moron by carrying a zip-lok bag full of used tampons. There have accually been studys on this not too long ago and the outcome is bears love menstural blood. It cant be any blood, but menstural. There have been cases reported, that women have been killed by bears during their menstural cycle. There are warning signs all over national parks that warn women about this. And yes there have been men that have used this for bait. You can store them in zip-loks in the freezer until you are ready for the hunt. But make damn sure that the zip-loks are double bagged when walking through the woods, to your bear location. You DO stand a chance of being attacked if the odor leaks out. And try to explain that one to the media !!!
I will get you some more attractants if you need them, just let me know.
Now as far as the bears and hogs being related. You would have been right about a few million years ago. The groups had common ancestors, millions of tears ago, but the two groups are so diverse that they're no longer considered related. The only relation is the fact that they are both mammals.
The bears are in the Creodonta/Carnivora group with the dogs, cats, raccoons, weasels, mongooses, hyenas, seals, and walruses.
Where the pigs/hogs are in the Condylarthra/Artiodactyla group with the deer, cattle, goats, sheep, hippopotamuses, camels, etc;
Sorry about getting sceintific on you.
Talk at ya latter Tony,
Cowboy Rick
Sounds good !
I wondered because bear are closely related to pigs .
Thanks !!

Hey Tony,
The last time I went for bear was when I lived in Maine quite some time ago. Hell, I dont even think I had gray hair back then.lol. I do know that if it the bait has a sweet smell and flavor to it, it will attract bears. We used to go to the grocery stores and Rainbow bread and get their old doughnuts and use them for our cattle and bear bait. You can sometimes set it up with your local grocer to where they give you a call when they have expired doughnuts and bread for you to pick up. If you work a ranch, this would be a plus. Farmers and ranchers usually have the first dibs on what ranchers call "cow bread".
This is a good question Tony and I will look into it further for ya. I still have contact with a biologist from Maine. I go there every summer for vacation and am currently looking for some acerage to purchase there for hunting only. Give me a few days and I will post it here for ya bud.

Did anyone hear about the Grizzly shot (I think) last year that was crossed with a Polar bear ? The fish and wildlife was going to fine the guy for shooting it (saying it was a polar bear) but when the DNA test came back BOTH they had to give the thing back to the guy .
I was hunting this bear this fall after getting some pictures of him next to an elk wallow . He eat grass in this little clearing for 4 hours . Next year ! He'll make a nice rug .
