Greetings Cowboy Rick! My friend started this website, and as a hunter I couldn't resist joining. I'm from South Elgin, Illinois located on the rim of suburbia and corn fields west of Chicago. I actively hunt Dove, Pheasant, and Deer. I'm newer to the sport of hunting with only about 4 years under my belt. Yet, I've collected a nice sized arsenal of guns. Rifle: Remington 270 WSM. Shotguns: Remington 870 Express, Remington 11-87 Super-Mag. Handgun (antique): Colt .22LR Pre-war model. It's not legal in Illinois (or will it be with Obama now running the show) to carry concealed weapons, but the second it is I'll go shopping. I've heard down south there is a season for spear hunting hogs - it that true?

Good question Phil.I had to make sure so I checked the regs book.I found nothing about spearing hogs. But it does not state that you cant either.Texas parks and wildlife does not like how the hogs are impacting Texas. They are way out of hand.I can almost bet that if you called the local game warden about this,he will allow this method.I however would not do this unless the hog can be dropped in its tracks.I have noticed that if you pop a hog and it runs on you,the meat totaly sucks. The male hogs need to have their nuts cut off right after the kill, they release a chemical from the nads that travel through the meat making it non-consumable.And if the male hog runs off after the shot, this will happen quicker. Most Texans will not even go after a hog if he/she runs after a bad shot. This is why it makes shot placement for a quick kill a must.I pop my hogs with a nasty 150 grain Hornady ballistic tip. Some people in Texas will say this is not enough.I say bullshit.I have taken hogs down with my .22 l.r. I go with shot placement. This is my key to sucess. And I prevail with a shit load of pork in the freezer. If I use my 30.06 I will go for the neck.If I want to use my .22 I will pop it in the head, right under the ear.Trust me,they will drop either way.I do not like to aim for the shoulder/lung or heart shot because the shoulder meat is very tastey.Texas allows hunting of hogs day or night with open season year round. My favorite method for these yummy creatures is at night.I have a few feeders on my lease that is equipted with hog lights. These lights are run off a seperate solar panel. When the sun decides to take a dip over the horizon, they come on and stay on for about 4-6 hours.Depending on temps. Then I will sit in my deer blind and have a blast. There is a tall tale that states you should not hunt hogs in the summer because the heat will spoil the meat before it can be placed in your freezer. This is also a load of crap.I pop hogs in the summer alot. The trick is,you need to get the blood out of the body, then you will have about an hour and a half. Two at the most. All I do is slice the throat and bleed them.I can go on and on.But if you want any specific info on the hogs, let me know. The spears sound fun,but it would have to be placed perfectly as to drop the bastards in their tracks.
Good day bro.

I can't beleive I missed all this until now. I WANT TO HOG HUNT! My neighbor swears by it, says you can leave out a dead hog and the others will come in to eat him. You can shine em, shoot em and do just about whatever you want because they are such a nusiance. I want to throw some flood lights onto a bait pile an open up with an automatic weapon, now that would be fun.

C.B.Rick sounds like a fun person to hang out with! Don- we should plan a hog hunting trip this spring. That would be bad-ass! I'm not sure I'd like to try the spear method - but I'm sure in on 'poppin' on and bleeding him to death... man that sounds raw...

Hey Rick! A friend of mine told me a friend of his started this site and I love it. My fav gun is my remington 270 stainless steel, comp stock, with the BOSS on the end, and Bi-Pod. other than that, it is my 58 cal musket for whitetail
or 870 shotgun for hunting bird and any bastard who breaks into my home at night. I have been looking into Hog hunting now that I moved to an area of the country where there are hogs. Phil and Don... i believe it is TN where you can hunt hogs with a knife! they say to have at least a 14" blade when you do it!!!!! I have always wanted to... but I think my 270 can do its business for the first few times!

Hey Reed.
I like the site as well. I hardly ever go to Camospace anymore. I am trying to come up with some ideas to make the hog group more interesting. I think I am starting to bore people. I heard a lot of good things about the 270, but never owned one. You can hunt hogs with knifes here in Texas. But have never tried it. I was invited to go with a freind awhile back but the wife didnt want me to do it. It does take a fairly huge set of balls to go after a bayed hog with a knife that is pissed off at the dogs.
Where did you move from Reed?
