Gotta question...Kind of thinking about recycling

Last night 11/9/08 I harvested a nice 4pt with my Bow and Arrow (my first with a bow), gun season starts in MI on the 15th. I was thinking should I keep the tarsal and metatarsal glands and use them for the Gun Hunt on the 15th? Just wondering if any of you had actually used "natural" glands for attractants or cover scents.

Would they even be viable? Or would they start to rot and not have the right "aroma" for another Buck to be fooled by the smell of these glands. It's going to be cold enough to keep them outside before I need them and I can always put them in a Ziploc Bag and put them in the freezer or fridge...besides when my teenage son comes home looking for something to eat and he opens that Ziploc bag it will be awesome for laughs.

Let me know your thoughts.

I have not used any natural glands to cover scents. I usually just throw some doe piss around my stand. Maybe it would attract deer. Defiantly will attract some coyotes.

Yes, Keep them chilled. They may trigger another buck to investigate the intruder. It is fightin' time and if another buck is around he may think you've got the doe. In Bowhunting Rutting Whitetails, Gene Wensel the author would cut the tarsal gland off the inside of the back hock and pin it to his hat.

Thanks for the input dude, I was thinking how could you go with the real thing...Don't know if I'd acually pin them to my hat, but, then again, WTF, why not. I'm going to check out that authors book, thanks for the tip.

Thanks

Send a message to Joe Henry (he has a profile on this site) about your question, I know he has lots of experience with tarsal glands

Congratulations on your first deer with a bow. Regarding the tarsal gland, we've used them before with good results. Two things we tried that seemed to work are 1) adding a little buck urine, and using them as a drag line, 2) adding buck urine, and hanging it near your stand. Keep it fresh, you don't want it to start rotting.
